INTRODUCTION

Become a master in the operation and maintenance of up to four landscape tool machine types, both battery and petrol operated machines, with our Landscape Tools Multi-tool course. 

OVERVIEW

Handheld hedge trimmers, trimmers for grass cutting, leaf blowers and vacuums are popular  tools across the agriculture, horticulture, landscaping, and grounds maintenance industries. They save time and work efficiently in tricky terrains and situations. 

They also have the potential to be some of the most dangerous machines in common use; that’s why our course will help users to recognise and reduce these dangers.

THE FINER DETAILS

This is an integrated training and assessment course. You’ll learn to use a variety of landscape tools safely and with confidence. You’ll also learn how to optimise performance and carry out routine maintenance. Understanding all the relevant regulation and safety requirements is key. You’ll be taught the need for the correct protective clothing and how best to maintain a safe working environment. A certificate of competence will be awarded once you complete the course.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

Our 2-day training course is for anyone employed in the agriculture, horticulture, landscaping, and grounds maintenance industries that currently operates or will be required to operate and/or  maintain handheld hedge trimmers, trimmers for grass cutting, leaf blowers and vacuums. 

This course is physical so you must be fit and able to carry out the tasks required in the course  programme. 

If you are inexperienced then you may require longer than the stated guide times to fully understand the information and training provided. 

WHAT WILL BE COVERED?

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to: 

  • Produce a site-specific risk assessment for landscape tool operations
  • Understand current legislation, regulations and industry guidance 
  • Identify the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) required 
  • Identify the health and safety features required on your landscape tool
  • Identify defects on a landscape tool and cutting equipment and decide which the operator  can remedy, and which require a service engineer’s attention 
  • Correctly carry out all routine maintenance in accordance with the machine manufacturer’s operator’s manual (MOM) and/or this course 
  • Prepare the landscape tool for use with the correct fuel/oil mix 
  • Start the landscape tool from both hot and cold starts in a safe manner
  • Carry out pre-start checks 
  • State the possible hazards/risks when carrying out maintenance or operational tasks
  • Maintain the landscape tool and relevant cutting heads in a safe and efficient working  condition 
  • Adjust the landscape tool for safe and comfortable operation
  • Select the correct cutting head for the relevant operating conditions
  • Operate the landscape tool in a safe manner, having regard for the safety of the public, the property and environmental factors 
  • Install, remove, transport and store a battery
  • Safely dispose of the battery, battery charger and machine
  • Carry out maintenance of battery equipment 
  • Clear the site correctly and professionally
  • Carry out the relevant checks on the machine after use
  • Store and transport the landscape tool safely and correctly

What equipment will I require?
We supply most of the tools, equipment and basic PPE that you’ll need. All students are required to bring their own site safety boots, but we will send you all the relevant information and requirements when your booking is confirmed.
